New York City Ballet was famously founded by the prodigal George Balanchine and Lincoln Kirstein in 1948.
The Balto statue is located in Central Park, near Lenox Hill.
The Disney children’s television show Jessie was shockingly not filmed in New York! The show was filmed in Hollywood, and only scenic shots were taken of New York.
New York has five boroughs: Manhattan, Brooklyn, Staten Island, Queens, and Long Island.
Long Island received its funny name because of its geographical shape. Dutch explorer Adriaen Block called it “Long Island” when he sailed into the Long Island Sound in 1611.
Seneca Village was a predominant Black neighborhood with established homes, and it was torn down to create space for Central Park. Today, some people hope for restitution for the tearing down of a marginalized community’s living quarters.
Slavery was introduced to New York by the Dutch West India Company in 1620. Enslaved Black people worked as domestic servants and in agriculture. New York abolished slavery in 1827. It was the first American state to abolish legal slavery.
New York City is the most densely populated American city, with 8.26 million people.
